How to Prepare for Hurricane Season

A Comprehensive Guide to Staying Safe and Secure

Hurricane season can be a daunting time for many, especially those who have experienced the devastating effects of past storms. Whether you're new to an area that experiences hurricanes or still dealing with the aftermath of a previous hurricane, it's essential to take the necessary steps to prepare for the upcoming season. In this guide, we'll provide you with tips and advice on how to stay safe and secure during hurricane season.

Hurricane season typically runs from June through November, and it's essential to be prepared for the possibility of a storm. By taking a few necessary steps, you can protect yourself, your family, and your property from the effects of a hurricane. As a survivor of Hurricane Charlie, Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Ian, and numerous others, although equally important but much milder storms, I can personally vouch just how important it is to be prepared!! In our home, one of our mottoes is "Hope for the best, but ALWAYS plan for the worst!" This is especially true when it comes to Hurricane season because you just never know what Mother Nature is going to throw at you!

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Know Your Risk

The first step in preparing for hurricane season is to understand your risk. Check your local news or the National Hurricane Center's website to find out if you live in an area that is prone to hurricanes. Do you know if you are in a flood zone? You can find out here.

Step 2: Have a Plan

Having a plan is critical when it comes to preparing for a hurricane. Make sure you know what you'll do in case of an emergency, and have a plan in place for your family and your pets.

Step 3: Build an Emergency Kit

Build an emergency kit that includes items like non-perishable food, water, first aid supplies, flashlights, and batteries. Make sure you have enough supplies to last at least 3 days. Also, don’t wait till the last minute to buy supplies. Hurricane season comes every year, start adding supplies to your normal grocery list at least 6-8 weeks before hurricane season starts. This spreads the cost out instead of having to run around at the last minute and trying to buy it all at once.

Step 4: Prepare Your Home

Preparing your home for a hurricane is essential. Make sure your windows and doors are secure and consider installing storm shutters. Trim trees and bushes around your home, and secure any outdoor furniture or decorations.

Step 5: Stay Informed

Stay informed about the weather and any potential storms by checking your local news or the National Hurricane Center's website. Sign up for alerts from your local emergency management office or download a weather app that provides updates.
