DIY Halloween Spell Books

These DIY Spell Books are absolutely Creeptastic!
Be sure to watch the full Video Tutorial below!

You'll need:
Books
Cardboard
School glue (Dollar Tree) $1
Hot glue gun (Wal-Mart)
Hot glue sticks (Wal-Mart)
Assorted mini Halloween creepy crawlies (Dollar Tree) $1
Mod Podge (Dollar Tree) $1
Paper towel or tissue paper (Dollar Tree) $1
Paint brushes
Black paint
Brown craft paint
Gold metallic craft paint
Tea bag
Hot water

To start this project you'll need some books. Although it doesn't matter what the book is really about, I chose to be a little authentic and used some actual "witchy" books. You can use whatever old books you have lying around or you can get some old books at the thrift store.

Two of the books I chose to use are soft covers, but I want them to be hard covers. So, I'm going to start with turning my soft cover books into hardcover books by using some cardboard and school glue.

I'm going to take my cardboard and tuck it inside the front cover of the book, then with a pencil or marker trace around the edge of the book cover marking where to cut your cardboard. With your scissors or rotary cutter cut the cardboard to size. I used a craft roller to flatten out one side of the cardboard that would be tucked inside along the spine, this step is optional. I then covered one side of the cardboard with school glue and glued it inside the front cover of my book; I then repeated this step with the back cover of the book. Set aside to dry.

Next we're going to take our hot glue gun and we're going to embellish the covers of our books by using the glue gun for writing and drawing designs, also to glue on our creepy crawlies. This is where you can get really creative. After our hot glue has dried we can start working on covering our books. You can cover them with paper towel, single ply is best. However after trying the paper towel method, I can definitely say I prefer using the tissue paper.

So to cover our books we're going to take a paintbrush and our Mod Podge and paint over the cover and everything that we glued on.

We're then going to take our single ply paper towel (if using paper towel you'll need to dampen it first) or tissue paper, crumple it up (I personally didn't like the effect of the paper towel so, I ended up only using the tissue paper), then open it back up and gently lay it down over your Mod Podge cover and pat it down. When using the paper towel you'll need to use a paintbrush or foam brush to really get into all the nooks and crannies of your design. With the tissue paper, just pressing firmly with the palm of your hand seems to be all it took for me. Now we're going to set our book aside to dry for a couple of hours.

After the Mod Podge on our newly covered book is fully dried, we're going to trim the excess paper towel/tissue paper, however leaving enough to wrap just inside our covers.

Now we can take our black craft paint and paint the entire book Black, again set aside to dry.

After the black paint has fully dried we can then go in with a dry brush and some of our brown craft paint and stipple the brown paint onto the book to give it an aged look and /or use our gold metallic paint to dry brush the raised bits of our creepy crawlies and our hot glue gun designs to add dimension.

Now to finish our cover by folding the extra paper towel/tissue paper over and glue it to the inside of your cover. Then take a plain piece of paper and cut to size to cover the inside of our covers and glue in place. Then, set aside to fully dry.

After our painted books are dry we can move on to the final step to really give our books an authentic aged and creepy look. For this last step you need a tea bag, hot water and a paint brush. Steep your tea bag in a small amount of hot water until the water reaches your desired color. Then dip your paint brush in the tea and gently bush the edges of your book's pages. This really gives a nice aged look to your books and in my opinion really completes the overall look and feel of this project.

Due to circumstances outside our control this recipe with accompanying video was posted later than planned, but we still wanted to finish this series! So better late than never!! We hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we did. This Recipe was created by Krazy Deal Daze Content Creator Michele Dennis aka the "other half" of the Krazy Deal Daze husband and wife duo. Below you will find a link to a free complementary printable version of this recipe for our readers😊

Gluten free Cheesecake Brain Mold

1 Plastic Brain Mold
1 cup water divided
1 1/2 cup of frozen strawberries
1/4 cup powdered Swerve sugar
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1/2 cup plus 3 Tbsp granulated Swerve sugar divided
2 package (8 oz each) Philadelphia Cream Cheese softened
2 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cups Schär gluten free Honeygrams graham crackers crumbed
3 Tbsp Land O Lakes butter with Olive Oil and Sea salt

Topping and filling:

Place your strawberries, 1/4 cup of water and 1/4 cup powdered swerve sugar and 1 tablespoon lemon juice in a saucepan. Simmer on medium Heat for 10 to 15 minutes or until your strawberries have completely broken down. Remove from heat and strain, you may need to use a spoon to help push the strawberry topping through your strainer. You should now have two separate bowls containing your topping and filling. Cool completely. Store in refrigerator until ready to use.

Cheesecake:

Beat cream cheese and 2 tsp vanilla in a bowl with a mixer until blended, using a spatula to scrape sides as needed. In a separate Bowl combine 1/2 cup Swerve sugar and 1 packet of Knox gelatin, add 3/4 cup boiling water, stir until gelatin is completely dissolved. Gradually add your gelatin mixture to your cream cheese mixture and beat with mixer until completely combined. Refrigerate cheesecake mixture for 10 to 15 minutes. Grab your brain mold and lightly spray with nonstick cooking spray. Stir your lightly refrigerated cheesecake mixture with a spatula scraping your size poor in about half a cup of your teeth cake mixture into your brain mold and swirl it around getting it into all the nooks and crannies of the mold add another 1/2 cup a cheesecake mixture and repeat then place your brain mold and remaining cheesecake mixture in the refrigerator for 10 to 15 minutes. Take your strawberry filling and about a half a cup of Cheesecake mixture combined and poor in the center of your brain mold trying to avoid the sides. Then slowly add the remainder of your cheesecake mixture around and on top of the strawberry filling. Lightly tap the brain mold on a hard surface to remove any air bubbles and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Graham Cracker Crust:

Combine 1/2 cups of Schär gluten free Honeygrams graham cracker crumbs, 3 tablespoons Swerve granulated sugar and one third cup butter in food processor. Pour graham cracker mixture into bottom of your brain mold lightly pressing the mixture into what will be the bottom of your cheesecake. Return cheesecake to refrigerator for 45 minutes.

To demold I put a plate over the bottom of the mold and while holding the mold and plate together I flipped the mold upright. You can also dip the mold in a bowl of hot water before flipping the mold over with a plate. I suggest you dry the mold off before flipping.

DIY Spooky Halloween Candles Tutorial

I'm really loving these DIY Spooky Halloween Candles!
Be sure to watch the full Video Tutorial below!

~Creepy Craft roll candles~

You'll need:
Toilet paper and paper towel rolls (Free)
Hot glue gun (Wal-Mart)
Glue sticks (Wal-Mart)
Platter (Dollar Tree) $1
Black spray paint (Wal-Mart) $0.99 I used what I had on hand
White/off-white craft paint (Wal-Mart)
LED tea lights (Dollar Tree) $1 each for a 2 pack
Optional: Embellishments (Dollar Tree) $1 School glue (Dollar Tree) $1

First I wanted to add some Halloween embellishments to my platter before painting it. So I took some skull and bat rings that I got from the Dollar Tree and cut off the ring part and hot glued them to my platter. I used one of my LED tea lights as a spacer tool.

Then I spray painted the platter black. In the how to video one of the skulls decided it didn't want to be on the platter anymore... So, I continued painting the platter even spraying the skull that jumped off, so when they both are dry I will simply glue him back on. You can always use E6000 glue for a more secure hold. Once painted set aside to dry.

Next we're going to start putting together our craft roll candles and adding the "dripping wax" with hot glue. When applying the hot glue I alternated with varying lengths of messy glue. I repeated this step with a second row of glue lines again of varying lengths that were a little shorter than the first row. Then I added a heavy line of hot glue around the top and allowed it to naturally drip down. Note: having your hot glue gun set on high, heats up the glue enough for it to run. After the outer glue drips were dry, I then ran a bead of glue around the inside of each roll to give a ledge for the LED tea light to sit on.

I then mixed my paint colors to my desired color and added school glue to the paint. Adding the school glue is optional, I like to add it to my craft paint as a cheap medium to thicken it up a bit. I also feel like it helps the paint last longer and adhere a little better. Then grab your paintbrush and paint away.

I also painted the tops of my LED tea lights.

After your candles are dry, it's time to glue them to your platter base, add you're LED tea lights and find it, it's new home amongst your Halloween decor!

~LED "Blood" Candles~

LED candles (Dollar Tree) $1 each for a 2 pack
Batteries (Dollar Tree) $1
Hot glue gun (Wal-Mart)
Hot glue sticks red or clear (I couldn't find red...)
Red craft paint (if you're like me and you couldn't find red glue sticks) (Wal-Mart)

The LED candles I used comes with a convenient holder so they stand upright which I thought was pretty clever! So we're going to put our LED candle into its holder and start adding our "dripping wax" with our hot glue gun.

When applying the hot glue I like to alternate with varying lengths of messy glue. I repeated this step with a second row of glue lines again of varying lengths that were a little shorter than the first row. Then I added a heavy line of hot glue around the top and allowed it to naturally drip down. Note: having your hot glue gun set on high, heats up the glue enough for it to run. On the top run of hot glue I went a little heavy on one side then flipped the candle upside down to give it an uneven melted effect.

If like me you couldn't find red glue sticks once the hot glue is fully dry it's time to paint the "dripping wax" red. Once dry they are ready to use.

~"Blood" Candles~

You'll need:
Cardboard egg crate to set the candles in (Free)
White tapered candles (Dollar Tree) $1 each 2 pack
Red candle (Dollar Tree) $1
Lighter (Dollar Tree)

For this simple project, I lit my tapered candle and allowed it to burn a bit. While I was letting it burn I let the wax drip into the egg crate to create a secure base for my candle later.
After I was done letting the candle burn down a bit I flipped it right side up and set it in the wax I was dripping into the egg crate. I then blew out the candle and with a wet paintbrush I put a drop of water on the smoking Wick to stop it from smoking (Didn't want to set off the smoke alarm above my head...).

I then took my lit red candle and proceeded to drip the melted red wax onto the white tapered candle. Once you've achieved your desired effect, just let the wax dry and you're done!
